Is eBay Discriminating against Homeschoolers?

I recently caught a discussion in one of my groups as a little known eBay policy.
Teacher's editions of textbooks and solutions manuals that are intended solely for use by teachers are not permitted by eBay.

Come to find out, Amazon and Half.com (owned by eBay) have the same policy. Now, some people feel this is against homeschoolers. For those of you who don't know, buying used books in order to bargain homeschool. There are 2 real solutions to this quandry. A)You can make your own answer key or B)pay full price. Personally, I think this is an unintended result of this policy. I truly believe this policy is to prevent student cheating. Am I being naive or are others paranoid?

  • We homeschool as well and I haven't tried buying cirriculum from ebay. I agree with you. Probably trying to keep it out of the student's hands.

  • I have nearly always bought our curriculum used, but was unaware of that Ebay/Amazon/Half.com policy. Is it new?
This explains why it was so hard to find a used teacher's edition the last time I looked, and why prices on those 3 websites have skyrocketed on these items. They *are* still available, but at far higher prices than I paid just 2 years ago.
Just for the record, I'm a big believer in giving the benefit of the doubt. If they're targeting homeschoolers, I think it will become obvious over time. In the meantime, I'll assume that they are trying to discourage cheating by students.

  • Ebay doesn't allow ticket scalping either, yet go look and you'll find hundreds of opportunities to buy a hat for $300, and as a bonus they throw in 2 free tickets to the Stones.

The Ebay curriculum community just needs an appropriate code word for the teachers edition - something like "complete" curriculum.

I doubt it's discrimination, most likely the rule came down from legal after a complaint.

  • If you go to eBay's search engine and type in "teacher's edition," you'll find plenty for sale.
I'm highly doubt they care one way or another about homeschoolers...I'm guessing the rule was made up for stinky little kids that steal their teachers' books and try to sell them on eBay??

  • I think ebay has gone too far. You can sorts of things that should not be listed. check out www.homeschoolauction.net, a new auction site dedicated for homeschoolers
