Giving Huckabee a Chance

With Fred Thompson being a bit of a disappointment I am going to start looking into Mike Huckabee. While I only saw part of the debate last night, I was impressed by what I saw and what I have heard. My concern is that NerdDad has heard that he is a big spending Republican. That is my one really big problem with George W. Bush. So what do you all think of Mike Huckabee?

  • I am very interested in giving Mike Huckabee a chance, also. I have only read and heard that he is the conservative's conservative. Even more so than Fred Thompson. I was emailed this quiz last month and Mike Huckabee was my number one pick after answering all the questions. I'm interested to know who you're number one pick is.

I just checked the link so it should work, but if not search for "pick a candidate" on your favorite search engine.

  • He's definitely charismatic but I'm dubious about his tax plan. Doesn't he want to implement a flat tax at 23%? That would be very regressive as it would increase taxes on low-to-moderate income families while decreasing them for wealthy ones.

  • It's not a flat tax on your income, it's a flat tax on what you spend; a national sales tax. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. I think it sounds like a decent idea, but then there are states that have a state tax, so you'd have to add that to the national tax. Still, that's no different from what we're paying in taxes now. With a national tax money that you save, money that you invest are not taxed which, in my opinion, is a good thing. More research is required. Something radical has to be done about taxes. Except for several years in the 1800's when taxes were levied to finance the civil war, the current tax system that we have has only been around since 1913. This country and it's government was not established with the right to just take your money, it's YOUR money. We should have more of a say in what happens to our money and with a national sales tax, potentially we can. For me I think it would curb my spending and encourage my savings. You get used to not seeing the money and become numb to it. But imagine paying a 23% tax on a $30,000 vehicle! AAAHHHHHH. I think I'll stick with the cheaper vehicle. It's just more "in your face", the taxes that you're paying. Like I said, more research is required.

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't know that about Huckabee. Check out this website I found while researching the flat tax.

  • As an Arkansan, I have seen Mike Huckabee as a minister and a politician. He was a decent, moderate governor most of the time. For me, his biggest problem is his lack of integrity and his personal greediness. He started his political career by building a secret campaign fund which he called "love offerings" so that he would not have to report the money as political income. Early in his governorship he tried to move $70,000 worth of furniture from the governor's mansion to his private home and used state funds to pay for his family's personal clothing etc. When he was caught on both counts he tried to say that he was just a poor preacher who didn't understand how government works. Every time he looked directly at the camera and said "I did not do that>'' And every time he was lying. He continues to lie about his role in the Wayne Dumond case and in other clemency cases. I know politicans lie and spin, but he claims to be the Christian candidate who is above that. I am disappointed in him.

  • Wow, that's interesting, too. Ironically I heard a caller on Neal Bortz this morning say pretty much the exact same thing. Where to find more info on Huckabee...hmmm.

  • Getting information from state records will be harder than it should because just before he left the governor's office Huckabee ordered that all state computers that had any information about him be electronically erased (reasonable and usual), then the hard drives crushed (at a cost of big bucks for the state). You have to wonder what he was afraid the next governor would find. I never heard of any big scandals about him, just the lack of integrity, the greediness and pettiness.
