WFMW: Backwards Day
So for Backwards WFMW I am asking you all a question to help me. I am looking for ways to help with all the paper clutter. I already open the mail over a recycling bin. It is the short term paper. You know all the stuff you hold onto for a little bit and then it piles up.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Hi Nerdmom
I remember you - you entered my virtual organising session. I'm giving 10% off to commenters, by the way.
Anyway....here are my 2 cents worth...
1. make decisions immediately and then split - to pay, to rsvp, to read, etc.
2. depending on the amount of paper you get in daily, you need to have regular maintenance sessions and stick to them.
Hope this helps!

I use a tabletop filing system. I've labeled hanging folders (bills to pay, coupons and promotions, etc.). I just drop the paper into the folders. The file sits on top of my kitchen counter, but it's better than having the loose paper in piles. You can see my post about it here:

Scan bills and bank statements to PDF. In fact, often you will find that your bank or billing company has a "printable version" or Pdf version online. save that. then shred the paper and be done with it.
Only keep important things, like reciepts for big ticket items (computers, tvs, appliances, etc) and tax papers. those can go in your safe (you should have one). scan everything else, even medical records and shred it all using a cross-cut shredder.
Back up your PDF files to a DVD or CD, and maintain your backups.
If you don't have Adobe PDF, try Paperport, or look online for a PDF maker. They are out there.

This blog posting of mine talks about the binder I typically use for just those kinds of papers: http://randomangie.blogspot.com/2007/05/tackle-it-tuesday-extreme-edition.html

I look forward to seeing what replies you get as this is amajor in our house too. I wish I could find a way to get rid of the 'piles' as they are called?

I'm a thrower.
I throw away everything because I hate paper clutter. It's like criptonite. After being around it for any extended time I am powerless to lift a finger against it.
