This is such a cute post. Go over and read it. I have to say that even though this is written as a joke, it holds great truth;).

School vs Life

“The difference between school and life? In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a lesson.”
~Tom Bodett

So what are the differences between school and life? School should be what prepares and equips us for life. Sometimes that learning will be happening at the same time life is because neither exists in a vacuum. I suppose that is why our school systems are failing. The kids aren't taught how history effects our life or our nation's life or the path of the world. How math should tie into finances and help develop our logic. Even how english, grammar, and literature can give voice to our soul. We aren't shown how or why we need to pay attention in school to make our lives run smoothly.

So I guess it really boils down to one thing. School teaches us the skills that our life needs to succeed.

Another Great Man Passes

William F. Buckley Jr. died today. There is already a touching tribute, or more appropriately a series of tributes up at National Review. He is an icon in the conservative movement. I personally enjoy the debate he had with Gore Vidal (due to language I am only posting a link). He wasn't a party man but a man of principals and he would take on anyone. May there be more like him. My sympathies and prayers to all who loved him and cared for him.

YouTube and Homeschooling

Does anyone else remember the animated science show on PBS called Eureka? Well, it is probably not surprising that bother NerdDad and I loved this show as kids. So NerdDad set to searching this out for the Nerdlings and Eureka! he found them. There are 30 pieces of episodes over at YouTube. We have downloaded them and uploaded them to the Tivo. NerdBug and NerdPie are loving them. They may not understand all the complex science but they ask to watch them over and over. So I am sure that the science will sink in! So I don't know who BubbleBear83 is but I appreciate the effort. Now that is using the Internet to our advantage!

Project Runway: The Reunion

So did anyone watch the Project Runway reunion show last night? I think the thing that actually shocked me the most is when Tim Gunn asked if anything had been said that was really hurtful to any of them. Then Carmen Webber had said that things that had been said when she left had really hurt. Things like "I am just glad it wasn't me" and "Even if she had finished it wouldn't have been that good" that had been said by other competitors. Really? That was soooo unreasonable? For those of you who don't remember it was the menswear challenge and everyone was afraid that they would be sent home. I guess I am shocked that her skin was so thin. When the judges were asked about the worst design and they alluded to her design that got her tossed she actually looked angry. The judges just mentioned it as one of the worst designs because she sent her model out with cloth around his neck instead of a shirt. She could have had a sense of humor about the whole challenge like others did but I guess that just isn't part of her personality.

Oh, I found a great blog, Blogging Project Runway!

Why Girls Love Diamonds

Apparently Dr. Helen has found a book that explains why girls like diamonds. While it makes sense I still prefer computers (most of the time;).

Everyone Has Their Line

First, watch this. Now don't pause halfway through and start formulating your arguments. Watch all the way to the end but there is a bad word beeped out.

Stephen Colbert is usually pretty irreverent and chooses to point out ridiculousness that way. But apparently there are somethings you don't leave unsaid (which I agree with) and hope that people catch. Even someone on Comedy Central can take a stand for God.

Where I Homeschool

Homeschooling can take place anywhere and any time. I personally have 3 spots that I use consistently to do real schooling (versus computer games, board games, outdoor observations, etc). The first is group activities like art and history activities. That happens at the kitchen table so I can sit everyone up at once and help them all.

Then for the NerdBug (who is the only official schooler) I have him do a lot of work at the kitchen island. It keeps him close enough to observe without sitting on him. I usually cook or clean the kitchen at the same time.

Then we have reading time on the couch. We read history, science books, literature, well just about anything. We all snuggle in before naptime just about everyday and read together.

So where do you homeschool?

Action Over Words

I just want to brag about one of my friends at Bible Study named Carol. She had heard about Berkley and the ill treatment of the Marine recruiters there. She felt that they needed encouragement so she got the phone number of the Berkley Marine Recruitment office and called them. She just wanted to reassure them that this is the fringe and not the majority of Americans. She told the young man that answered the phone that the publics views doesn't affect the positive feelings we have for the men in uniform. Bravo Carol for not just talking about this issue (as I am doing now;) but actually taking a step to affirm the strength of these young men!

What Do You Think?

Apparently in Muncie, Indiana a man painted his own crosswalk and was charged with criminal mischief. There is an intersection with stop signs in a residential area and people didn't usually stop. So Whitney Stump called the city and the sign department to get a crosswalk painted. The city said that since it wasn't near a school it wasn't necessary. So he went out bought paint and did it himself.

So what do you think about it? Since the pedestrian would have the right away is there really a problem with the crosswalk? The city doesn't have any plans to remove it. The reason I think it might be ok that he painted it himself is that it was forbidden. I don't like the mentality that government seems to have with "if it isn't required it is forbidden". How about you?

Grissom Leaving?

According to Buddy TV, William Petersen gave an interview to British Radio Times about him leaving CSI. While it seems vague it does seem impending. He also seems very critical of the whole franchise. The one thing that seems to hold him back is his responsibility to all who have a job through what he does. Maybe he realizes that without his character there is no CSI. If he leaves I wonder if they will try to replace his character and possibly let the show die a slow death or if they are just going to close up shop.

Battlestar Galactica and Politics

Now I know where I have seen John McCain before. Apparently he is Colonel Tigh (or a replecant model of;)who was revealed as a Cylon. For those who don't watch Battlestar Galactica (Why don't you? I have been meaning to talk to you about this) the Cylons are robots who are trying to eliminate humanity. I love the images that appear to be done by the Metamerist for Pieniazek.

First, you get a new word and the difficulty builds. Second, for each word you get right they donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program. The amount you can play is unlimited. Go play, learn and have fun.
