I am WOMAN, Hear Me Roar!

So NerdDad and I ordered a new tv!!! It is a 47 inch and isn't here yet but there will be pics when it is set up! But I digress. Since we ordered it from Dell I got a call today. They wanted to know if I had gotten it yet and wanted to talk to me about paying someone to come mount it for me. The conversation was both comical and a bit shocking.

Dell Guy: "Are you planning on mounting the tv?"

Me: "Not now, maybe in the future" (at this point I still didn't know why he was calling)

Dell Guy: "Are you a preferred customer? We would love to have someone come out to mount that tv for you with either a flat mount or a tilting mount."

Me: "When we decide to mount it, my husband and I will probably do it."

Dell Guy: "You would help?"

Me: "Well, I would assume my few engineering classes could prepare me for something like this."

Dell Guy: "No, I meant the labor side."

Me: "Well, I did carry 4 children"

Dell Guy: "That's different"

Me: "Yea, its harder"

Dell Guy: "Umm, well"

I pretty much ended the conversation there. He was pretty dumbstruck at that point... The labor side, really?

Kind of a funny way to start my day;).

A Declaration

NerdDad found this. I don't think he has heard the original song it is a take off of (which I like) so I will have to show him that video;). I have never heard of these people before but I already love them! I think this will be a great way to get the kiddo's memorizing the Declaration!!!

First Impressions

So I was talking to a woman from church about some service stuff and right before we were done she said she had something kind of funny to tell me. OK, I like funny;). She recalled bringing a meal out to my family after a surgery (or baby) and that was the first time we really had a discussion. She had seen me at women's ministry things and checking in my kids on Sunday at church but hadn't really talked to me. At that point she said she thought I was bubbly, friendly and a bit airheaded. When she brought out the meal we were talking about Bible Studies and the book Bad Girls of the Bible came up. I had said it was a good book but not really deep enough for a study. For me it was bathroom reading. I lent her the book and she went on a trip. She said that she poured over the book and thought it was way to deep for bathroom reading and then realized I couldn't be a ditz. So at this point in the conversation I am laughing. Then it gets better. I was meeting her for a quick exchange of stuff at church on my way to my Precept study and quickly met her husband (again). She said that she later asked him what he thought of me. He described me as cute, bubbly and kind of ditzy or airheaded. She said she then went on to tell him how wrong he was;).

I have to say I am a bit shocked. 15 years ago this would have really bothered me because I was so afraid of not being taken seriously but now I don't know what to think. Objectively, I do not think I am an airhead and I don't really feel the need to defend myself too much (did I mention that I was have a discussion about whether or not studying end time prophecy has a needed place in your spiritual health?;). But this is a new one for me. There have been many phrases used to describe me but ditzy? airhead?

I remember my husband saying that I came off very serious the first time I met him (at a Bible Study in college and I was wearing nylons and a skirt after work;) and at the same meeting scared and intimidated a man who later was our best man and a dear friend of mine. My best friend met me quickly in a computer lab in college and thought I was quiet (man, was she wrong;).

But what does it mean or matter? I can't really control what you think in that 30 second exchange? I can try and put my best foot forward but beyond that? When I met this woman's husband I didn't say anything stupid or factually wrong. I shook his hand and looked him dead in the eye. I also had been talking to people and was in a rush to exchange material, both physical and informationally, and then get to the study I was already running late for. So there wasn't really anything different to do. Maybe I should have talked about the speed of light, programming or calculus... No, that would have just come off as pompous or rude. Better a ditz;).

So you, my readers, what was your first impression of me? Either in real life or just from my blogs? I am curious!

Unknowningly Calling Them To Return Home

This poster was put out to 7,000 churches by the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) so that more Hispanics will participate in the census. I find it hilarious that the only problem that Washington Post seems to pick up on is the use of Christ for a secular purpose. It isn't until you land at the Corner (or actually were I started) that anyone points out the real crux of the matter.

Mary and Joseph were returning to the ancestral home ie leaving where they immigrated from. So really this poster is saying that all immigrants should return home. I find it hilarious that the Reverend who is heading up the boycott (because of the using Christ and God for vain, non-worshiping purposes) doesn't seem to remember the actual Christmas story and what Mary and Joseph are actually doing.

But at least they printed most of them in Spanish;).

Spelling Errors

I am a sloppy typist and a horrible speller, I totally admit it;). But..... I know this is going to come off nit picky but a State dinner is a big deal. A big enough deal that they should spring for a spell checker (a person not the software;) for all printed material put out at it. Apparently in our abundant federal budget there still isn't enough money for a spell checker because there were quite a few spelling errors in the menu. Now before you jump on me remember about formal dinners. At formal dinners a menu placed at every place setting. Go check out the errors over at Mom Logic.

Unnecessary (muppet) roughness

I'm not usually surprised by the gratuitous sex and violence I see on TV. Ads for The Cougar during Green Acres, chat lines during Star Trek, and ED pills on almost anything are amoung those I have to vigilanly skip if I want to watch TV with my kids. But how can I explain this to my kids:

NerdMom and I have head this song performed a few times lately (on Glee, the Tony awards show, and I think Don't Forget the Lyrics) and the quality has varied from "OK" to "Why?". Especially confusing is why it's now considered a duet. If you had Karen Carpenter and Joe Cocker on their best days, you still couldn't compete with Steve Perry singing a Journey power ballad. But that won't stop anyone, as the good folks at College Humor demonstrate.

Apparently back in the 1920's people didn't take blood rivalry's quite so seriously? I am not sure what to think about this old newspaper clipping over at Jeffrey Goldberg's site but it is entertaining.

I Think Someone is Hinting

NerdDad sent me a piece talking about how great the Dr. Horrible DVD is. So you think someone might be hinting for Valentine's Day? It is only $10.50 so I may just have to get it for me (I mean him;). If you missed Dr. Horrible or haven't heard of him, get out from under the internet rock. Dr. Horrible was hilarious and I definitely want to see it again! Joss Whedon is a genius with Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion are so funny!

Viagra: The New Weapon in the War on Terror

Yes, I said Viagra. It only took 4 Viagra to bribe an Afghan chieftain. I think we are all familiar with the fact that the CIA sends in agents to find informants. And the fact those "assets" aren't giving us information out of the goodness of their hearts but due to some payoff be it money, women, or weapons. But that can have it's downside.

The usual bribes of choice -- cash and weapons -- aren't always the best options, Afghanistan veterans say. Guns too often fall into the wrong hands, they say, and showy gifts such as money, jewelry and cars tend to draw unwanted attention.

"If you give an asset $1,000, he'll go out and buy the shiniest junk he can find, and it will be apparent that he has suddenly come into a lot of money from someone," said Jamie Smith, a veteran of CIA covert operations in Afghanistan and now chief executive of SCG International, a private security and intelligence company. "Even if he doesn't get killed, he becomes ineffective as an informant because everyone knows where he got it."

The key, Smith said, is to find a way to meet the informant's personal needs in a way that keeps him firmly on your side but leaves little or no visible trace.

In this case it was a 60 year old man with 4 wives. It took 4 little sample pills and he was ours. I am cool with this because they can't shoot us with our own weapons or really do us any harm with bribes like this. And maybe they will share and the enemy will be, how do I say, otherwise engaged;)?
