Divorce and Houses To Big?
I am watching Moving Up on TLC and I have a question. I have seen and interview similar to this many times. A divorcee is leaving her house because it is just way to big for her and the kids. Does 1 person make all that much of a size difference? I understand that there are many reasons for moving in a divorce but this particular reason just doesn't make sense.

It depends on how much space the spouse that left took up. For example, although he doesn't have one now, my husband likes to have a den, and also a large garage, where he can work on his assorted hobbies. I have a sewing room for my sewing machines, large cutting table and all my fabric. If a family had those extra rooms, it might make sense to downsize when they were no longer needed.

It also has to do with the upkeep of the house. A divorce means the remaining spouse has to take up the work that the other spouse did round the house. To be sexist, if it's he male leaving, he's usually the one doing the upkeep things like seasonal outdoor work (snow shovelling, lawnmowing, cleaning out eaves troughs, pool maintenance, etc., etc.) not to mention all the handyperson and repair jobs around the house that always come up.

Hi! I was talking to my son (age 10) this morning about some friends of ours who are getting a divorce. As I tried to diplomatically explain various reasons for divorce, I realized that most of the reasons I was coming up with didn't make much sense. So I guess that the idea of moving to a smaller house makes about as much sense to me as divorce itself. Senseless.

I was thinking it has more to do with the cost of having a larger house with a possibly smaller income. downsizing to cut cost so to speak.

My DH telecommutes on Fridays so he needs a home office in order to work in peace. If, God forbid, something were to happen to him neither I nor the kids really would need that extra room.
