Yet Another Reason We Homeschool

Recently my inbox has been flooded with pieces talking about how something needs to be done about the proposed Harvey Milk Day in California public schools.

I have to say that I am a bit ambivalent because it seems to fall in line with the purpose of socialized education. Which is to inhibit the development of Judeo-Christian values. This is what is called a "Dog Bites Man Story". If a man bites a dog, that is news. But is a dog bites a man, not so much because that is what dogs do. Homosexuality has become mainstream within the school system. So what makes you think that they wouldn't be looking for pioneers to celebrate? Just like when school became integrated we then began celebrating heroes of the integration (such as Martin Luther King Jr.). I am not saying that these people are equal in achievement. Harvey Milk is famous for being an openly gay politician who was killed for it. So he is the perfect martyr.

What worries me more is the situation that arose recently in Dos Palos where a kid was punished for wearing a shirt that depicted the US flag. And why?
The assistant principal initially thought Shelly's T-shirt violated a clause of the school dress code that does not allow "shirts/blouses that promote specific races, cultures, or ethnicities."

As NerdDad said when he heard about it, we have to be careful to not offend anyone who doesn't like America like the teachers. While I understand that the schools don't support my values but now they are blatant about their dislike for America. I think at this point, these type of situations are more dangerous than Harvey Milk Day.

But the overriding issue? I don't know what to say to parents who have their kids in school who are angry about Harvey Milk and say,"Call the Governor". My gut says, "You already handed you kids over to the school system. What did you expect? And do you really think a phone call will fix it all?" I know it is harsh but unfortunately true. If you don't like the influence of the system on your child (Harvey Milk Day, etc) the only thing you can really do to stop it is to remove the child from the situation.

Now do I just abandon the school system? No, I vote for change (and not Obama;) and do try to change things but not at the cost of my kids.

There is my rant for the day.

  • But what about all the families who are not financially able to flee the government-run schools? It's all very easy for those of us fortunate enough to be in a financial position that allows us to homeschool to say, "just leave". But with the ridiculously high cost of basics these days (especially housing, healthcare, and energy) many families need both parents in the workforce and often they can't afford the tens of thousands of dollars per year it would cost for private school tuition.

What we need is a voucher program for low-to-moderate income families so that they have the same freedom that wealthier ones do to choose the type of schooling they feel is best for their families.

  • Ugh this kind of stuff makes me so upset. Unbelievable how we (America) can allow people to work here who despise the country! If people are worried about offending other people, we may as well not bother getting out of bed in the morning and walking out the front doo! There is ALWAYS going to be SOMEBODY who isn't happy!!!!!

  • Okay, here goes...
I am a public school teacher.

I have been a public school teacher since 1989.

In the past 19 years, I have found that the vast majority of teachers I have worked with do not support the homosexual agenda.

For the past 7 years I have worked in a high school science department. Most of the teachers in that department hold advanced degrees in the various branches of science. Of the 16 teachers in my science department (science typically has the stigma of being tree hugging and liberal) 11 are God-fearing Christians and will not bend to the hollyweird agenda.

In my experience, most of the public education teachers have their values in the right place.

To lump public school teachers into one group is just not correct.

There, that is my two cents.

  • Yes, pull your kids out of the system first (or never put them in) and THEN call the governor!

May I humbly comment regarding most public school teachers having the right values...I don't disagree, and I wonder if your life is at times difficult (do you have to live as a closet Christian as some teachers do?)

It is, however, the agendas of the teachers unions that are driving these social, uh curricular changes. If indeed MOST teachers have rightly-placed values then why have these politically influential groups been taken over by radical minorities?

I say this not as a condemnation of those valued teachers. I just get the sense that the Loud Left is intimidating the Mushy Middle through political correctness, making it difficult for the Religious Right to have any say at all.

    It's rough out there!

  • Perhaps I should make an addition. I should add that most Fresno/Clovis teachers that I have worked with live a Christ centered life.

See, here is the problem. The NEA (National Education Administration) controls the lobbyist. Our local CTA (California Teachers Association) gets their playbook from the NEA. This is due to the fact that control of the labor unions is seated in liberal L.A. and S.F. The mostly conservative Fresno/Clovis teachers are stuck in the middle. As a member of FTA (Fresno Teachers Association) a good amount of my dues go to pay for that liberal agenda. Why not just resign my membership you may ask? Along with my membership, I get one million dollars of liability insurance. If I resign my membership, CTA requires that I still pay 90% of the normal fee but since I am not a member, I no longer have liability coverage.

What does this mean in the real world of Fresno/Clovis? The liberals give us teachers a model to follow and we ignore it. Rather than teach things like being accepting to those who share a different (although unbiblical) lifestyle; we teach the curriculim of reading, writing, math, science, etc.

Did you know that right now there is a club at Sunnyside High School that is preparing to take dozens of public school kids to Africa on a mission trip?

  • Anyone looking for an alternative homeschool high school curriculum will be happy to hear the state of California now pays for online high school courses. Students go to school from home 100% online and all the curriculum is provided. Here's a short video about Kaplan's online high school program for California students.
