Why I Don't Own a Smartphone

I love gadgets and tech. But I don't own a smartphone. Heck, I don't even own a "real" phone plan. It is for a couple of reasons. First, I have 4 kids so if I am not home I probably am to busy to talk (ie out with the kiddos). But the second has to do with the costs. PC World has a great image that compares all the smartphone plans. The cheapest ends up being just over $100 a month. That is really pricey and they all go up from there. They seem to be fun toys but...I also find that I might as well just use my laptop because I can do more on it. Between Starbucks and my church I have great access to free wifi. How about you? Do you have a smartphone? Do you think they are worth the price?

  • I really do not think ANY of the phones are worth the price. We have a home phone because of our buisness (yellow pages will not run an ad with only a cell phone listed) and I have one cell phone that is a trac phone; you buy the min as you need them. I end up paying $100 for the whole year. Only 8 people have the number. The only time it is even on is when one of those people have the kids.

  • I do have a smartphone (a Blackberry) and I use it constantly. I track my calorie intake, am able to look up those calories online without using a different device, can respond to and recieve emails, make my shopping list without paper, read and comment on blogs, read books (I installed a free e-reader onto it). It has a GPS device for use while driving. That's not even half of what I use it for.

Additionally, I tether my Blackberry to my laptop and recieve broadband wireless access (important in my rural area where there is no DSL, WiFi or Cable and where satellite internet costs a fortune ).

Oh yeah, I make calls too! :-)

It's true that it costs me about $80 a month for my normal services, and another 50$ for my 5 gig wireless access, but I don't mind much because to get any other internet services out here that were as good would cost much more than that (satellite service out here is $300 for equipment and then $50 pre month there afterward, for the most basic service--which is not as good as my wireless broadband). In fact, we were paying more than $130 per month for a second landline with "accelerated dialup"--1/5th as fast as our current service through my Blackberry.

I think it all amounts to what you need and what options are available in your area. If we had cheap, realiable cable internet or DSL available, I would probably have a cheaper phone with way less options.

  • Well, you know how I feel about my phone. I <3 it. I particularly love the GPS. :) We do not have house phones, so the expense it not that much more for us in the long run. :)
