WFMW: Library Books

This week we hit a new record in the NerdFamily household. We hit the 25 book limit at the library. That was the indicator that we needed to both NerdBug and NerdPie their own cards. Now we can have a combined 75 books out at a time. When you have books in this quantity you need to have some organizing systems in place. For new, unread books I have a spot on the bookshelf where they all get stacked as they come in. It is when they are taken off the shelf and read that things get sticky. So now I have a library out basket. Each person is only allowed to have one library book off the shelf at a time. Then when you are done with it you put it in the out basket. Then simply pick up the basket and take them in! Easy Peasy!

  • I am the only one handling returning the books for now, but this is a good tip that will come in handy for me later. Thanks!

  • And see, as a former librarian I applaud your efforts to take care of your books! Great tip!

  • I always wondered who were the people that would have 25 books checked out at a time! :) We never come close to that, partially because I'm afraid of losing track of them. But your system will be great if and when we get to that point! Maybe I should get my 4-yr-old his own card, too. He would love that!

  • We are always at our 25 limit and I don't dare let my girls use their own cards--one card at a time, because our fines would be exorbitant. We go once or twice a week for this reason. Our real trouble is that my kids can't watch movies and instead have audio book cd's everywhere! They can't get a new one till they return the old but often they forget about the books.

  • 3 of my children have library cards so we are always up to our ears in library books. I have a library tub where all the books go. Now if I can only get them to actually put the books back in there when they are done. :)

  • Wow...another library nerd :) We have 32 books out right now and we too have a shelf that holds our books so we know where to find them when they are due back. I just discovered the fun of the library recently and I can't help myself!

  • 25? You need to talk to your library about raising your limit! We can get 100 books per card and are often asked for a second card. With no tv, we've got to do something for entertainment!

  • Oh this is a handy idea. I'd love a basket on wheels though. We stack the ready-to-go-back books on the railing near the door. Then we load them into the backpack which gets so heavy. I may have to look into this. :) Thanks for the idea. :)

  • At our library they will print off a list for you when you check out the books, but you have to ask for it.
