Christianity and Taxing the Wealthy

Chris B over at RedBlueChristian has a great piece on why taxing the rich at a higher rate and therefore charging them their "fair share" is wrong. A thought I am left with is if God had a flat rate in tithe, where do we get off having a sliding scale?

  • But what about Luke 12:48? "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."

And what about Luke 3:11? "He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise."

The Gospels are pretty clear about the responsibility of the fortunate to help those who are less well off.

Now, I'm not arguing for higher taxes- I think that they could be lower than they currently are and still allow for a social safety net.

What we need to do is to overhaul government spending such that it benefits the poor rather than the rich. $700 billion to bail out Wall Street? $300 billion in farm subsidies, 90% of which go to wealthy agribusinesses rather than small family farms? Pork barrel defense spending, prescription drug coverage for wealthy seniors, and on and on.
