Stealing Money or Stealing Life?

Bernie Madoff received his sentence of 150 years. Dr. Helen has a piece wondering why he has received a larger sentence than most murderers. Logically I understand that since there were more instances of crime, there were more years up for penalty. But it does raise some questions. The surface question maybe what is more valuable: money or life? But my question is...What is worse killing 1 or 2 people versus stealing from 100's? Madoff effected more people's lives but they still have them. But by effecting so many people's lives has he made a bigger impact against society? Isn't that what the judicial system is for, to protect society? I really don't have the answer. How about you?

  • I have a problem with sentences that are pointlessly long. 150 years? Do you think that might be overkill?

I also think that if you murder someone your life is forfeit. Yes, there are exemptions to that thought of mine, but overall I think it would be succinct.

For stealing money and betraying trust? I don't have all the answers, but it seems like this guy spent a lot of years living high on the hog while others were critically damaged by his actions. Maybe he should be responsible for making reparations to everyone he wronged. Every last one of them. I bet that would take longer than the 150 year sentence they gave him.

  • Someone who invested with him and lost their retirement committed suicide. That alone should be worth 150 years.
