Aloha Friday:Homemade Halloween

Ok, I admit it. My kids are going to look shabby for Halloween. Their costumes are totally homemade/kid style. So here is my question:

Is it better to have an original homemade costume (that may be shabby) or to look polished for Halloween?

  • i personally think that homemade costumes are more special to a kid. if you can get your children to be part of the process of planning and/or making them, it's even better. unless they're going to some special party, no one thinks about the costume after halloween night.

be proud of those shabby costumes!

  • it depends on the child i think, but if the child is involved in the making process, he would have the proud feeling and sense of accomplishment when he wears it.

  • I think making your own costume is very sweet and something your children will remember. Either way is fine.. but homemade is always more meaningful! :)

  • It really does not matter, all though a little of both is always good and creativity seems to come out! Good question. Stop by my Aloha Friday for a Halloween question, no candy needed!

  • I think that it depends. Like me, I am not creative at all, so my girls' costumes would be terrible if I made them. There are so many talented people out there though that make some great costumes.

  • I honestly do not think it matters too much. I believe that most parents put a lot of thought into any costume that they put their children in. If someone is not as creative as another and needs to buy one, so be it.

  • My little one is too young to even make up his mind about what he wants to be. I took him shopping for a costume the other day and he decided on the horse that fits around your waist to make it look like you are riding a horse. Of course, as soon as we got home and he tried it on he was terribly upset because he has issues with things like hats and anything around him.
So last night I went to the halloween store at 9:00 and got him a fireman costume that fits like regular pants and a jacket.

Next year I might buy a cheap sheet and cut some holes out for eyes and let him go as a ghost. It would save some trouble.

  • I never bought a costume for my kids when they were growing up. I made them all. Now I make the grandkid's costumes. This year I made an Anakin Skywalker costume but I bought The thing cotume and Scooby Doo. The Thing was lovely.

But the Scooby Doo costume needed a lot of touch up work.
Homemade costumes aren't Shabby. You will put more love into your children's costume than any store will.

  • I think it depends. I've always loved seeing homemade costumes, though. :)

    Happy Halloween!

  • Sometimes the homemade ones look better then the store bought ones, but I don't have a sewing a machine or anything so we buy ours.

  • Personally, I like homemade ones. It is fun to try to be creative and make something. When I was young, my brother and sister and I always made our own and the process of thinking about it, designing it and making it was part of the fun!

  • It's better that they are happy, whether it's hand made or store bought.

My son made a refrigerator costume out of a large box last year and everyone loved it. This year he's a toaster. (? yeah, I don't know either)

  • Depends on the costume and how ambitious mom is, or how much cash she is willing (or not) to shell out!

    Happy Aloha Fri!

  • We usually go the home made route. My MIL is a great seamstress and makes our girls their costumes. However, our oldest wanted one from the store this year. Funny how as they get a little older, they are interested in the retail regulars. Oh well, it could really be worse.
